Bomber Baby

This hat was supposed to be for Tristan for Christmas. I knew it was unlikely to get done in time but two days late isn’t that bad really. The pattern is by Candi Jensen for the tv show Knitty Gritty — it is in two parts (part one and part two) — and made from Berroco Suede and Plush yarns. I think Plush has been discontinued but they still had it at one of my local yarn shops and I’m sure there are lots of equally charming substitutes. I found the pattern to be so-so. It wasn’t awful or littered with mistakes or anything it just wasn’t a great pattern either. You knit the hat in pieces when I think it might be easier to pick up stitches for things like the ear flaps and avoid all that sewing together. Maybe because the pattern was for a tv show the techniques had to be simplified. Who knows. Anyway, regardless of the pattern, my baby sure looks cute in it.

Bomber Baby

Pattern: “Suede” Hat by Candi Jensen for Knitty Gritty (part one and part two)
Yarn: Berroco Suede, in color 3714 Hopalong Cassidy; Berroco Plush, in color 1901 White
Yardage: less than one 120 yard skeins of the Suede and less than one 90 yard skein of the Plush
Needles: US size 7
Gauge:
Modifications: The pattern is written to fit a child up to one year. I wanted it bigger to fit my one year old so I went up a needle size and knit for 4″ before beginning the decreases. This worked well as the hat is ample for my big baby’s head.

Capturing a toddler with a lensbaby is nearly impossible. When we get time to convert the guest room back into a photo studio we will take a better picture. Keep your eye on the Flickr badge.
