Opinions Please

It’s still barf city with the babe around here so a short post today but something I’ve been meaning to ask you guys. So, this is the fireplace in our family room:

Please ignore the baby einstein video on the TV — it’s the best way I know to contain a barfy 20-month old with a penchant for climbing — and the bits of clutter sneaking in the sides. Anyway, the fireplace. So I want to hang a photo up there above the mantle from the session with Nichole. I want it to be a family shot — all of us in it — but I think you’ll understand I don’t want my boobs up there life-sized for any visitor to see. So here are some options:

Fireplace - Photo Possibility

The hand one. Papa thinks this is too creepy with the giant hands and everything. I like that it isn’t obviously a family portrait — the whole portrait over the fireplace thing seems a little cheesey to me — but it still is us. I also like that it’s a little arty.

Fireplace - Photo Possibility

Too weird with our headless bodies? I’m not sure I love my thighs over the fireplace much more than my boobs. It is a good family shot though and Papa likes that you can see the killer shoes — mine are orange, and I obviously know nothing about that linked site except that they have a photo of the shoes — he got me for my birthday last year.

Fireplace - Photo Possibility

It might be hard to tell from this mock-up but in this photo Tristan is in focus in the foreground and the rest of us are blurred in the background. I like that Stefan and I are blurred but because this seems to be a photo of Tristan with the rest of us as background I’m not sure I want it for over the fireplace.

So what do you guys think?

The first one. Yes, definitely the first one!

    I love that last one

I love the warmth of the first one…the hands entwined…the B&W…I love everything about it…it gives an artsy look and shows a tender warmth, among all of you. All the pictures are absolutely lovely…so either way, it will look grand with on of these lovelies!

Jenn-I like them all. Though I think my favorite is the 2nd one.

I love both the T shot and the hands. I like the hands because it is just very touching and non-obvious, but I also love the T shot because it has real spirit about it, and whilst it is a full body – full family shot it has spontenaity and life, rather than a more trad posed picture (and it still has the killer shoes in it). I think either would look charmng. I guess it comes down to whether you want to smile feeling all warm and family, or laugh – as they would be my reactions.

I’m not leaving an opinion ’cause I can never make decisions — but I AM very humored at the variety of replies you’re getting. Good luck with your decision — it’s a hard one!

I like the first one, of the three. I don’t like you guys headless in a family portrait and I dont like that your daughter is out of focus in the last one. I would like it best, if she was in the the foreground with your son. I like the idea of the parents being out of focus — watching from the sidelines, seeing all, an everpresent force — but that only works if all the children are in focus. So, that leaves the hands. Which I like. Becuase its all of you and it’s togetherness.

Although I love all of the shots, I like the first one best. It is a clear winner, IMHO. The symbolism represented by those hands is huge: family, love, togetherness, husband/wife union, parents as foundation. It seems to set the tone for the room. The others have one child or the children as the primary focus and doesn’t give the strong sense of unity that you can see plainly in the first shot. I would put the other two in smaller frames on different walls in the room.

i feel badly telling you this, but you asked. i’ve never been a fan of hand photos, i don’t really like the obligatory hand shot in wedding photos either. my favorite is the last, but do you think she’d be jealous that the focus is on him? also? i’m a professional graphic designer, i can make your photo less revealing, if you’d like. oh, and maybe a shot of the kids in two frames would balance the painting below the mantle…

    hands – timeless!

  13. 14 sally July 16, 2007 at 4:25 pm

Ok, love the shoes, Papa U has good taste.

And I like the last shot the best. I love all the photographs, but I think the color photo works better in that room.

I really like the last one but not the out of focus so much. Out of the three I would go with the hands. I agree with you, more artsy. I always wanted a feet shot like that one.

Number three! With such bold walls you need COLOR and what a great composition! Lovely!

  16. 17 amandajean July 16, 2007 at 11:07 pm

oh, boy, that is a tough decision. I think I would vote for the hands photo.

  17. 18 Steph July 17, 2007 at 3:51 am

    The first one! It’s timeless.

  18. 19 connie July 17, 2007 at 5:57 pm

both the first and the last one are great… i like the idea of the first one, but if you’re all blurred, it may be weird. but the first one… can you make it sepia toned or something? its pretty but seems a bit harsh of color in your nice warm looking space

I’d have to go with the hands. The strong stone fireplace needs something just as graphic and bold and the B&W hands works best! As the kids get older this will still be a winner, whereas, as they get older with the other shots each child will dislike something about it and beg you to take it down. I think this has best longevity and creates a sense of togetherness through the joined hands!

It sounds to me that you don’t really like any of them. Any other alternatives?

  21. 22 amy July 18, 2007 at 12:15 pm

I like all of the photos, but I’m not sure I’d actually put a photo there. I think some other decoration might work better and be set off nicely by the beautiful stone chimney. Something with texture…like a wreath or an oil painting or a collage…

  22. 23 Lucy Locket July 18, 2007 at 4:33 pm

I like the last one! another contradictory opinion for you!

  23. 24 Suzanne July 19, 2007 at 7:23 pm

I like the artiness of the first one!

  24. 25 hotsalad July 20, 2007 at 5:08 am

    Hands all the way!

  25. 26 D July 20, 2007 at 1:11 pm

Personally I like the hands photo, but I wouldn’t hang it there. I would move the TV up and use the TV in that spot. It just looks really confusing with the TV below the mantle and a photo above it. But, that is just my opinion.

    BTW, which did you choose?
