Birthday Gifts For G – Part 1

Denim Dress
Modeled by Katrina

My niece — the one who spent the night last weekend — just turned 5 and her birthday party is today. Most kids we know get a gift from Katie and/or Tristan for their birthday but there are a few — nieces/nephews and fake nieces/nephews — who also get a gift from Papa and me. We usually have the kids give them a toy and we give them clothes. Anyway, this year my niece will be starting kindergarten and I figured she could use some school clothes.

The red print is from Superbuzzy — I just typed superbuxxy which I think is something else entirely — but they’re unfortunately out of it right now. My sister loves anything Japanese cutesy so I knew this fabric would be right up her alley, and with the going back to school I thought all the letters would be appropriate. I just hope my niece doesn’t use it to cheat on spelling tests since elephant is spelled olephant in the print. The denim has a shimmery thread in it — seems tacky, yes, but little girls love it — and I bought 5 yards for something like $1 a yard off the clearance rack at JoAnn’s. The stripe was a last minute addition. I had trouble figuring out what fabric to use as a contrast and finally decided on this stripe which alone looks pretty Christmas-y but I hope just looks cute in the outfits.

I love Burda patterns! Every one I’ve ever made has been a good one. Quite unlike other patterns from other, ahem, companies.

You are incredible! I have yet to sew clothing for my kids. (I did do a dress for part of a Halloween costume last year though.) Your outfits are amazing!

How cute! Little girls are so much fun to sew for…I miss that. My daughter is 25 and I made many things for her. She’s getting married in October, so maybe in a few years I’ll have grandkids to sew for. My youngest niece just turned 11 and the last thing I made for her was a leopard print fleece bathrobe (at her request!)

These outfits are super cute! I look forward to the day when sewing up a thing or two will be second nature. In the meantime I will droll over others’ lovely things.

What an adorable model. And the clothes are great, I especially love the stripey top but you didn’t list a pattern for that.
