Tree Trimming

Whew! We had our annual tree trimming party on Saturday and I had so much to do for it that blogging just fell by the wayside. One of those things was getting this dress made for Katrina. Despite a fabric shortage and a run to the not-so-close fabric store for more yardage I got it done on-time and still had time to prepare some food for the guests.

Christmas Party Dress

The pattern is from the Autumn issue of Ottobre (style number 22). What Ottobre patterns lack in written instruction they definitely make up in drafting — wow their patterns fit together perfectly every time.
I don’t mind the succinct written instructions but I know it does bother some people. The other thing about Ottobre patterns is that the pieces do not include seam allowances. This is actually great for me because my kids tend to be in a higher size because of their height — I don’t know where they get it from, I’m 5’4″ — so I just make the size up and use the pattern pieces as is. Of course, this can backfire sometimes. Like on this dress where those flounces in the front are a little short. Amazingly they need just an extra 5/16″ in length. Anyway, hopefully no one noticed, I’m sure they were just distracted by my well executed contrast zipper.

What an adorable little dress. I love the Holly Jolly fabric…I made a table topper out of it, but it never occurred to me to use it for a garment. I miss having little girls to sew for. My daughter is 25, but my youngest niece is 11. The last thing I made for her was a leopard print fleece robe (at her request 🙂

Gorgeous. I like the idea of those patterns but they do scare me a little. I love what you did here… and Yay for your zipper. Yes, they are tricky!
