Independence Day

Independence Day

Last night we walked down the street, past the pond, to the school. A rabbit hopped along the path and we met the first fireflies of summer. Lying on the green grass the percussive booms reverberated in our chests while the night exploded with color. Look Mama, fireworks with a point to the sky. I see them too little one. Wandering home I thought about how lucky I am, to live in this dysfunctional family of a country, to see the night-sky filled with the beautiful colors of celebration. And as I was thinking my babe was lulled to sleep by the sweet smell of honeysuckle and the bullfrog’s croak like the pluck of a banjo string on a balmy summer night.
